Facts
The Boreal Forest is the world's largest land-based biome. Also called Taiga, the Boreal forest spreads in many places over the globe, specifically in Alberta, Canada. This forest is responsible for 29% of the world's forest areas. The Boreal forest is also the world's largest carbon container: there is a lot of plant life in the forest, but it is too cold for many decomposers to live and thrive. This leads to a large scale buildup of carbon in the forest. Of the 300 species of birds living in the Boreal Forest, only 30 species stay for the winter. Only 12% of the forest is protected, and the other 88% is available for logging. Also, the forest emerged at the end of the last ice age.
